Massage Candles

A massage candle is lit like any other candle, but its wax melts at a low temperature and turns into a warm, scented oil that you pour onto the skin for a couple's massage. To choose, look mainly at the scent and the size.

What is a massage candle?

It is a candle made of low-melting-point wax, usually soy or coconut, with essential oils. As it melts it gives a warm oil with no risk of burns, which does the same job as a massage oil, with the warmth and scent of a candle. There are scents of vanilla, sandalwood, cherry blossom, chocolate, jasmine, coconut or lavender, candles with pheromones and kits for couples with gel and candles. Brands include Shunga, with eight scents in two sizes (30 and 170 ml); Kama Sutra Ignite, at 170 g and with six scents; Bijoux Indiscrets, with Melt My Heart and coconut Slow Sex; Swede Senze, Petits Joujoux and Eye of Love, which is the one with pheromone candles.

How to use it

Light the candle 15-20 minutes beforehand so that enough liquid oil builds up, and blow it out before pouring. Test a few drops on the back of your hand and pour from a height of 15-20 cm onto the back, chest or thighs. Then spread it with your hands as you massage.

How to choose

  • Scent: the product page states the fragrance; if you do not know the smell, start with a mild one.
  • Size: check the ml or grams on the pack; the more there is, the more massages you get.
  • Pheromones: if it has them, the name or description will say so.
  • Candle only or kit: some kits for couples include a gel as well as the candles.

Frequently asked questions

Do massage candles burn?

No. They melt at 40-45 °C, well below decorative candles (60-80 °C), and the liquid wax feels warm, not hot. Even so, always test a few drops on the back of your hand first.

Can I use a regular candle for a massage?

No. Decorative candles melt at much higher temperatures and can cause burns. Use only candles made for massage, with low-melting-point waxes and skin-safe oils.

Can I use them with a condom?

Not with latex condoms, unless the product page says they are compatible: the oil can weaken latex. If there is penetration afterwards, wash the area first and use condoms with a water-based lubricant.

Can I use it on the genitals?

Only on the outside and if the product page allows it; do not use it inside the vagina or anus. The scents and essential oils can irritate mucous membranes.
