Anal Douches
An anal douche is a bulb or hose system that carries warm water into the rectum to clean it before anal sex or before using anal toys. To start, choose a bulb with a slim, smooth nozzle; the ones on this page range from 90 to 224 ml, and tap-fitting systems are for deeper cleaning.

What are anal douches?
It is a reservoir, usually a soft bulb, with a nozzle that goes a little way into the anus to bring warm water into the rectum and then release it into the toilet. It is used for anal cleaning before anal sex or before playing with a butt plug or a dildo. It gives physical comfort and peace of mind, because it removes the worry about making a mess. It is also known as an enema, bulb enema or irrigation bulb. Besides douches, enemas and bulbs, this category includes tap-fitting shower systems, such as the silicone All Black ones, with a hose and universal adapter. There are no cleaning solutions: everything works with warm water. Addicted Toys is the brand with the most models, almost a third, between travel bulbs and douches with an adapter; next come CalExotics, Mr Play, with USB rechargeable bulbs, and the steel douches from Metal Hard. The bulbs that state their capacity range from 90 to 224 ml.
Types of anal douches
What changes from one to another is how the water arrives and what the nozzle is made of. If you are looking for a toy for penetration, you will find it in butt plugs, anal beads or prostate massagers.
- Rubber bulb: the simplest, squeezed by hand and small enough for any toiletry bag. It is the usual choice to start.
- Bulb with silicone nozzle: the nozzle is longer and more flexible. There are models of 27 and 28.5 cm total length, some with ridges or small beads.
- Metal douche: steel nozzle, rigid and easy to wash thoroughly. Some screw onto a hose.
- Hose system: connects to the shower or tap and gives a continuous flow, useful if you want to clean deeper.
- Rechargeable or automatic: a battery-powered pump drives the water, and some have several intensities.
- Travel: compact models to carry with you, some with interchangeable nozzles.
How to do anal cleaning
Fill the bulb with warm water, put lubricant on the tip, insert it slowly and squeeze gently. Remove it, release the water into the toilet and repeat 2-3 times until the water comes out clear. With a bulb, 2-3 minutes is enough and only the first 10-15 cm are cleaned. For deep penetration, tap-fitting shower systems are more effective.
Never force the entry: if you feel pain or resistance, stop. The water should be warm, neither cold nor hot, and the pressure low. With hose systems, adjust the flow before inserting the nozzle.
Care and cleaning
After each use, fill and empty the bulb several times with warm water and mild soap, rinse it well and let it air dry with the nozzle pointing down so no water stays inside. Metal and silicone nozzles are easier to wash than rubber ones. If the douche has a battery, check the product sheet to see whether the motor can get wet or only the nozzle and reservoir. Those labelled “water resistant” can get wet, but do not submerge them. Ideally, each douche should be used by one person only.
How to choose
- Capacity: check the millilitres on the product sheet. With a larger capacity you refill less often; a small one is easier to control.
- Material: rubber, silicone, PVC, TPR or metal. Rubber and silicone are flexible; metal is rigid.
- Nozzle: check the length and thickness. To start, slim, smooth and with a rounded tip; ridged ones are for those who already have some practice.
- Valve: those with a non-return valve stop dirty water from flowing back into the bulb.
- Connection: if you want to use it in the shower, check on the product sheet that it comes with a hose or a tap adapter.
- Water and battery: for rechargeable ones, the product sheet says whether they are water resistant or fully waterproof (submersible).
Frequently asked questions
Is anal cleaning compulsory before anal sex?
It is not compulsory, but it is highly recommended. A quick rinse with a bulb lets you forget that worry and concentrate on enjoying yourself.
How much water should I use and how many times?
As much as fits in a bulb, which on this page is between 90 and 224 ml depending on the model, with 160 ml as the most common capacity, repeated 2-3 times until the water comes out clear. In total it takes about 2-3 minutes.
How long before sex should I do it?
Leave a little time, so that any water left inside can be released. If you still notice something coming out when you move, wait a bit longer.
Does the water have to be hot?
No, warm, at body temperature. Neither cold nor hot, and with low pressure.
Which lubricant should I put on the nozzle?
With silicone nozzles, water-based lubricant; silicone-based lubricant can damage the surface. With metal you can use any, for example an anal lubricant.
Does using an anal douche hurt?
It should not. If you feel pain or resistance, stop, add lubricant and try a slimmer nozzle.
Can I use the bathroom shower instead of a bulb?
Yes, with a tap-fitting system and a nozzle designed for it. Adjust the temperature and pressure first, because the flow is greater than with a bulb.
Can it also be used vaginally?
Some can: there are dual-use bulbs for anal and vaginal use, and the product sheet says so. It is better to have one for each use. If you use the same one, wash it well before moving from anal to vaginal use.
