Sex Toys for Women

Sex toys for women stimulate the clitoris, the vagina or both at once: vibrators, clitoral suction toys, dildos, Kegel balls, vibrating eggs and strap-ons, to use solo, with a partner or to give as a gift. If you are not sure where to start, first decide whether you want external stimulation, internal stimulation or both.

What are sex toys for women?

They are any toys designed to stimulate the clitoris, the vagina, the G-spot or the nipples. Some work externally, without penetration, like clitoral suction toys and mini vibrators. Others are inserted, like dildos and G-spot vibrators, and some do both at once. All of these types are here together, so you can compare them whether you are shopping for yourself or for a gift. If you are looking for something designed for the penis, head to sex toys for men.

Types of sex toys for women

There is one subcategory designed for female couples, and the rest of the category brings together these types:

  • Lesbian toys: strap-ons, dildos and other toys designed for use between two women.
  • Clitoral suction toys: they stimulate the clitoris with air pulses, without touching it directly. Some also have a part that vibrates.
  • Mini vibrators and massagers: for external use, on the clitoris or nipples. Mini vibrators fit in the palm of your hand, and wand massagers are larger.
  • Rabbit vibrators: one part goes inside the vagina and another stimulates the clitoris at the same time.
  • Thrusting toys: they move in and out, with a pushing motion, rather than just vibrating.
  • Vibrating eggs: they are inserted into the vagina and many are operated with a remote control.
  • Dildos: with no motor or with vibration, realistic or designer, made of silicone or glass, or with a suction cup to hold them in place.
  • Strap-ons: they hold a dildo at the hips for use with a partner.
  • Nipple stimulators and suction pumps: they create pressure or suction on the nipples or the genital area.

What the research says

Using a vibrator is common. In a survey of a nationally representative sample of 2,056 women in the United States, aged 18 to 60, 52.5% had used a vibrator at some point (Herbenick et al., 2009, J Sex Med).

Toys are used far more solo than with a partner. In a study of 3,001 women, among those who had masturbated in the past year, 46.4% used toys almost always or always when masturbating, compared with 5.1% who used them almost always or always during partnered sex (Hille et al., 2026, Menopause).

Another study, of 361 women aged 18 to 35, found that those who used toys with a partner had higher arousal and satisfaction scores, and reported more intense orgasms, than those who only used them solo (Sansone et al., 2025, J Sex Med). It is a cross-sectional study: it shows an association, not that the toy is the cause.

Care and cleaning

Wash the toy before and after use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, and let it air dry. If it has a motor, check the product page to see whether it is fully waterproof (submersible) or only splashproof before putting it under the tap, and never boil it. TPR or TPE toys are more porous than silicone: wash them more carefully and, if you are going to share them, use a condom. Leather harnesses should not be soaked: wipe them with a damp cloth and leave them to dry away from heat. Store each toy separately, in its own bag or a box, so that different materials do not touch.

How to choose

  • External stimulation: clitoral suction toys and mini vibrators are the easiest to start with.
  • Internal stimulation: a G-spot vibrator or a silicone dildo. Look at the diameter before the length; the product page gives both measurements.
  • Both at once: a rabbit vibrator stimulates you inside and the clitoris at the same time.
  • Material: the product page says whether it is silicone, ABS, glass, TPR or TPE. To start with, silicone is best.
  • Water: “fully waterproof (submersible)” is fine for the shower and the bath; “water-resistant” can take the tap but cannot be submerged; “splashproof” only withstands a little water.
  • As a gift: if you do not know their tastes, an external, rechargeable vibrator is the safest bet.

Sex toys for women: frequently asked questions

Which sex toy is best to start with?

An external one, like a clitoral suction toy or a mini vibrator. There is nothing to learn, they are used without penetration and they help you find out what intensity you like.

What is the best material for a sex toy?

Silicone, ABS plastic, stainless steel or glass: they are non-porous, easy to clean and do not hold on to bacteria. Check the material on the product page before you buy.

Which lubricant should I use with a silicone toy?

A water-based lubricant. Silicone lubricant can damage the surface of the toy over time. With glass or ABS you can use any of the lubricants.

What is the difference between a dildo and a vibrator?

A dildo has no motor: it is used for penetration and you set the rhythm. A vibrator vibrates, inside, outside or in both places. There are also vibrating dildos, which do both.

Can they be used with a partner?

Yes. Remote-controlled eggs and vibrators, rabbit vibrators and strap-ons are designed for that, and you will find more ideas in sex toys for couples.

Can sex toys be shared?

Yes, with a new condom for each person and washing the toy between uses. A condom that is put on properly reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections, including when sharing a toy.

What are Kegel balls?

Weighted balls that are inserted into the vagina and move around inside as you walk. To start with, choose light ones with a cord so they are easy to remove; the weight is on the product page.

Are there toys that can be controlled remotely?

Yes, many vibrating eggs and vibrators come with a remote control. The product page lists the number of modes and whether they can also be controlled from your phone.
