Male enhancers
Male enhancers are capsules, creams, gels and sprays for libido, firmness or staying power: food supplements and cosmetics, not medicines. To choose, decide whether you want something to use on the skin when you need it or a supplement to take regularly, and check the ingredients on the product page.
What are male enhancers?
They are over-the-counter products that aim to help you in bed: with desire, with the firmness of an erection or with how long you last before you come. There are two kinds. Some are taken, like capsules of natural extracts and other food supplements. Others are applied to the penis, like gels, creams and sprays, and some are designed so you notice the effect straight away. They work as occasional support or as a regular addition to your sex life. They are no substitute for seeing a doctor if you have an erection problem that keeps happening.
Types of male enhancers
There are products from Cobeco, Medica Group or Rhino, among other brands, and by form and purpose they break down like this:
- Libido and erection capsules: food supplements with plant extracts and other ingredients. Depending on the instructions for each one, they are taken daily or before sex.
- Semen supplements: capsules designed for sperm volume or, in some cases, for taste.
- Erection creams and gels: you massage them onto the penis before sex to feel warmth and stimulation, and some aim for more firmness according to their product page.
- Enlargement creams and capsules: intimate massage creams and supplements that the manufacturer presents for penis size. That claim comes from the manufacturer and is not a guaranteed result.
- Delay sprays and gels: they reduce sensitivity so you last longer. Some contain an anaesthetic and others are sold without one, with a plant or aloe vera base. There are more in delay products.
- Stimulating sprays: formulas with ingredients such as ginkgo biloba that you apply shortly beforehand to wake up the area.
Safety
Before taking any capsule, read the ingredients list and the dose, and do not exceed it. If you take medication, have heart or blood pressure problems, or are allergic to any plant, talk to your doctor first. With creams, gels and sprays, first try a small amount on the inside of your wrist and wait a while in case it irritates. If it itches or stings, wash with water and stop using it. If a delay product contains an anaesthetic, let it absorb before penetration or use a condom, so your partner's area does not go numb too.
How to choose
- What you want it for: desire, firmness or staying power; the product page says which of the three each product aims at.
- Format: capsules if you prefer to take them regularly; gel, cream or spray if you want something for the moment, just beforehand.
- Ingredients: check the full list, especially if you have allergies or take medication.
- Anaesthetic: for delay products, the product page says whether it contains one or is labelled "anaesthetic-free".
- Condom: check the product page to see if it is compatible with latex condoms.
- Amount and instructions: look at the millilitres or the number of capsules and how many doses or applications you get.
Male enhancers: frequently asked questions
Do natural male enhancers work?
They may help, with a modest effect. For ingredients such as maca, ginseng, tribulus and L-arginine there are studies that support moderate effects on libido and circulation. They do not work miracles: they help you make the most of what your body can already do, without transforming it.
Are they medicines?
No. They are food supplements and cosmetics, which is why they are sold without a prescription. They are not intended to treat erectile dysfunction.
When should I see a doctor instead of buying an enhancer?
If the erection problem keeps happening or gets worse. For real erectile dysfunction, see a urologist. For an occasional boost when you are stressed or tired, these supplements may help.
How long do they take to work?
It depends on the format. Gels, creams and sprays are applied shortly beforehand, and some work straight away. Capsules can be taken occasionally or regularly, and each product page gives its instructions.
Do enlargement creams or capsules make the penis bigger?
Do not take it for granted. What they promise about size comes from the manufacturer and is not a guaranteed result. Creams, used as a massage, may give warmth and stimulation.
Can I use a delay product with a condom?
Yes, if the product page says it is compatible with latex. Apply it, let it absorb and put the condom on afterwards.
Can I take enhancers if I take other medication?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Some plant extracts may not combine well with certain treatments, especially those for blood pressure or the heart.
Are there enhancers for women?
Yes, but they are in another section. Gels and products for female sensitivity are in female orgasm enhancers.
