Clitoral Vibrators

A clitoral vibrator rests on or around the clitoris and stimulates it with vibration, on your own or with a partner. To choose, decide whether you want to cover the whole area (flat) or one specific spot (finger or bullet); if you want stimulation without contact, using air waves, that is what clitoral suction toys do.

What is a clitoral vibrator?

It is a toy for external use: it is not inserted, but rests on the clitoris, the lips or the area around them and passes the vibration on through contact. You can move it, press harder or lighter and change the intensity until you find what you like. Many are small, so you can also use one during penetration or together with another toy.

Types of clitoral vibrator

There are flat ones, finger ones, small bullets and wearable butterflies, and each shape spreads the vibration in a different way.

  • Flat: wider and flatter, they cover the whole area and are held in your hand or sit between the two bodies. Some vibrate in pulses. If you prefer a large head with a long handle, see the massage wands.
  • Finger: they fit on a finger and take the vibration exactly where you place it, like a caress with more strength.
  • Bullets: small and pointed, they focus the vibration on one spot. You will find more in eggs and bullets.
  • Butterflies and vibrating panties: you wear them and keep your hands free. Some are controlled with a remote or an app, like the remote control toys.
  • With extra heads or functions: some models have several interchangeable heads, heat or a tip that imitates licking.
  • With suction: they combine vibration and air waves. That is why some models appear here and also in clitoral suction toys.

What the studies say

In a survey of 1,055 women, 36.6% said they needed clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm during intercourse, and another 36% said that, although they did not need it, their orgasms were better with it (Herbenick et al., 2018, J Sex Marital Ther).

A study with 27,931 participants found that, when alone, the highest orgasm frequencies were associated with clitoral stimulation with a vibrator or dildo, with watching porn or erotica and with clitoral stimulation by hand (Hewings-Martin et al., 2026, Arch Sex Behav).

In another survey of 2,056 women, recent vibrator use was related to several aspects of sexual function (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, pain and overall function), and those who used one scored higher on most of them (Herbenick et al., 2009, J Sex Med). This last one covers vibrators in general. All three report what the participants say and what tends to go together, but they do not prove that the toy is the cause.

Care and cleaning

Many are made of silicone or of silicone with ABS plastic; check the material on the product page when it is given. Dry it well before putting it away and keep it in its case or in a cloth bag, apart from other toys. Before taking it into the shower, check that it is fully waterproof (submersible): those that only resist water or splashes should be washed without putting them under water. Do not boil it: it contains a motor and a battery.

How to choose

  • Shape: flat ones cover more of the area; those with a fine tip and finger ones focus the vibration on one spot.
  • Intensities: the more it has, the easier it is to find yours. Vibration patterns are a bonus.
  • Size: a bullet or a finger vibrator fits in any washbag; a larger flat one usually vibrates more strongly.
  • Charging: USB rechargeable ones save you batteries. The product page states the battery life when the manufacturer publishes it.
  • Water: a fully waterproof (submersible) toy can be used in the shower or the bath; a "water-resistant" or "splashproof" one cannot. For the bath, see the fully waterproof vibrators.
  • Noise: if you live with other people, check the noise level when the product page gives it.

Clitoral vibrators: frequently asked questions

How is it different from a clitoral suction toy?

In the way it stimulates. A vibrator passes vibration on through contact, while a suction toy creates pressure waves over the clitoris without touching it. Some models do both and appear in both categories.

Is a clitoral stimulator the same as a clitoral vibrator?

Almost. "Clitoral stimulator" is a broader name that also includes suction toys; here you will find those that work by vibration, on their own or with an extra function.

Can I use it with a partner?

Yes. Small ones, like bullets and finger vibrators, fit between the two bodies during penetration. If you want one designed for that, see the couples' vibrators.

Which lubricant should I use?

A water-based lubricant, which works with any material. With silicone toys, avoid silicone lubricants unless the manufacturer says they are compatible, because they can damage the surface.

How do I clean it?

With warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, before and after use, without wetting the charging area if it is not fully waterproof. Dry it well before putting it away and do not boil it.

Which is best to start with?

A small flat one or a bullet with several intensities. That way you start gently and turn it up when you feel like it.

Can I use it on other areas?

Yes, externally: on the nipples, the lips, the perineum or wherever you like. If you use it around the anus, wash it before going back to the clitoris or vagina. To insert something into the anus, use a toy with a wide base that cannot slip inside, like those in anal toys.
