Masturbation sleeves

A male masturbator is a sleeve with a textured inner channel that wraps around the penis, used by hand or with a motor: eggs, vaginas, anuses, mouths and automatic models. To choose masturbation sleeves, look at the material and how easy they are to clean, then decide whether you want manual or with suction, vibration or thrusting.

What is a male masturbation sleeve?

It is a hollow toy with an inner channel full of ridges and textures, which you lubricate and slide over the penis to imitate the feel of a vagina, an anus or a mouth. The first ones were little more than rubber tubes. Today there are models with realistic inner textures, adjustable suction and materials that mimic the feel of skin. They range from eggs and compact sleeves that fit in a pocket to life-size torsos, and you can use them alone or with a partner.

Types of masturbator

With manual ones you do the moving; automatic ones have a motor and do the work for you. The category is split into four groups:

  • Automatic: automatic masturbators do the movement for you with suction, thrusting, rotation or vibration, and some also give heat.
  • Mouths and hands: mouths and hands are the ones that imitate oral sex or a hand, with a mouth-shaped or hand-shaped opening.
  • Vaginas and anuses: vaginas and anuses brings together realistic models with a vaginal, anal or dual opening, as well as butts and large, weighty pieces.
  • Masturbating vaginas: masturbating vaginas focuses on those with a vaginal opening, from compact sleeves to realistic models. If you also want an anal or dual opening, see the previous one.

Brands, models and materials

Fleshlight, the American brand of interchangeable sleeves, is considered the industry standard: a SuperSkin sleeve inside a rigid case, with hundreds of inner textures. Tenga, the Japanese brand known for its design, has the Tenga Egg, single-use and perfect for trying out without commitment, and the reusable Tenga Spinner and Flip, with original textures that are easy to clean. Realistic vaginas and anuses are usually made of cyberskin or TPE, the most realistic to the touch, and full torsos have dual openings and real weight. If you are after a full body, see also dolls.

As for materials, SuperSkin is exclusive to Fleshlight and very realistic. Cyberskin feels like skin, but it is porous and needs more upkeep. TPE is soft and flexible, with a good balance between price and realism; TPR, very common in product listings, is from the same family. Silicone is the most hygienic, although it feels less realistic.

What the studies say

There is data on how many people use them. In a survey of 25,294 gay and bisexual men, 78.5% had used at least one sex toy and 27.9% had used masturbation sleeves (Rosenberger et al., 2012, Arch Sex Behav). Solo masturbation is also common: in a national sample of 3,423 US adults, 76.7% of men and 59.4% of women had masturbated alone in the past month (de Jong et al., 2026, J Sex Marital Ther). These are surveys about what people do; they do not compare models or brands.

Care and cleaning

A masturbator lasts as long as you look after it: proper cleaning is what most affects its lifespan. Wash it after every use and store it only once it is dry inside, because any moisture left in the channel encourages mould. Models with a motor should not go under the tap unless the product page says “fully waterproof (submersible)”; many only withstand a little water, so if the sleeve comes out, wash it separately and wipe the motor part with a damp cloth.

How to choose

  • Material: TPE, TPR or cyberskin for a feel closer to skin; silicone if you prefer something easier to keep hygienic. The product page states the material.
  • Cleaning: check whether the sleeve comes out of the case or the motor, or whether the channel is open at both ends; the easier it is to reach the inside, the better it cleans and dries.
  • Opening: vagina, anus, mouth or dual opening. Choose the shape you fancy; inside, the texture of the channel varies a lot from one model to another.
  • Size and weight: pocket-sized, hand-sized or a large piece. Large pieces with real weight are more realistic, but they take up more space and are harder to dry.
  • Functions: manual, or with suction, vibration, thrusting, rotation or heat. With automatic models, check how many modes it has and how it charges.
  • Water: “fully waterproof (submersible)” means you can wash it whole or use it in the shower; “splashproof” or “resistant” only withstands a little water.

Masturbation sleeves: frequently asked questions

What is the best male masturbator for beginners?

A small, simple one. A Tenga Egg lets you try the sensation without spending much; if you like it, a Tenga Spinner or a Fleshlight Go, the compact version of Fleshlight, is the next step. For maximum realism, try a cyberskin vagina from Doc Johnson or Pipedream.

How do you clean a masturbator properly?

After each use, rinse with warm water, wash with an antibacterial soap made for toys, rinse again and let it air dry completely; if it has a motor and is not fully waterproof (submersible), wash only the sleeve. With cyberskin and TPE, once dry, apply renewing powder to keep the texture soft. Never use perfumed soap or alcohol.

Which lubricant should you use with a masturbator?

Always water-based lubricant. Silicone lubricants break down cyberskin, TPE and SuperSkin. Put a generous amount inside the channel and on the head of the penis before insertion, and add more as soon as it feels dry: dry friction damages both the material and your skin.

How long does a masturbator last?

It depends on the material and how you look after it. With good care, a Fleshlight lasts 2 to 5 years, a reusable Tenga 1 to 2 years and a cyberskin or TPE one 6 to 12 months. The Tenga Egg is single-use, although many users reuse it 3-5 times.

Are there masturbators for gay men?

Yes. Any masturbator works for anyone with a penis, whatever their orientation. If you want a specific shape, there are realistic anuses and mouths, as well as neutral-shaped models, such as the eggs or many automatic ones.

Manual or automatic masturbator?

It depends on whether you want to set the pace yourself. A manual one is lighter, quieter and easier to wash; an automatic one does the suction, thrusting or vibration for you, but it is heavier, needs charging and its motor part cannot always get wet.

Can you use a masturbator with a partner?

Yes. Your partner can handle it as part of foreplay, and some automatic models with Bluetooth can be controlled from a phone. You will find more ideas in sex toys for couples.
