Babydolls
A sexy babydoll is a loose piece, somewhere between a top and a nightie, that falls from the bust and comes with a matching thong or briefs: alluring lingerie without having to put on lots of pieces. To choose, look first at length and size, then at the fabric and how sheer it is.

What is a babydoll?
A babydoll is a loose top that flows from the bust without hugging the tummy, with a matching thong or briefs. It combines the best of lingerie and a nightie: it is comfortable and flattering, and it almost always shows quite a lot. Most are not fitted: the flow of the fabric covers without clinging. It differs from a nightie, which tends to be longer and designed mainly for sleeping, and from a teddy, which is one piece and fastens at the crotch like a bodysuit. If you are after several matching pieces, take a look at our lingerie sets too.
Types of babydoll
All of them include a matching thong or briefs, and some come with a coordinating kimono for a three-piece set; if you like the idea, there is more in robes and kimonos.
The most common fabrics are French lace, sheer and elegant, the classic; tulle, light and airy, with lots of flow; satin, soft to the touch with an elegant drape; and mesh, a sheer net that is modern and comfortable. Sizes run from XS to 4XL, and in plus sizes you will find more styles.
- Short: above the hip, leaves the legs bare and is the boldest. It is the best seller.
- Midi: to mid-thigh, covers a little more without losing its alluring feel.
- Long: to the knee, more romantic and elegant, with a fluid movement as you walk.
- Fitted: instead of flowing from the bust, it hugs the body; in product listings it often appears as a chemise.
How to choose
- Size: many styles come in dual sizes (S/M, L/XL); the product page says which one it is, and the loose cut gives you some room.
- Length: the description and photos show whether it is short, midi or long.
- Fabric: lace, tulle, satin or mesh. Check the composition on the product page: nylon with elastane stretches more than nylon on its own.
- Sheerness: check whether the fabric is opaque, semi-sheer or fully sheer, and whether it has a front opening or an open back.
- What is included: besides the thong or briefs, some come with a garter belt, stockings or a kimono; the product page says which pieces are included.
- Straps and cups: adjustable straps, halter neck, structured cups or loose fabric without underwires, depending on how much support you want.
Babydolls: frequently asked questions
Which babydoll should I buy as a gift if I don't know the exact size?
A loose-cut one: it is the safest piece to give because it forgives a difference of 1-2 sizes. A size M babydoll suits most women between a 36 and a 40, and if you are unsure, go up a size, as the looser a babydoll is, the more flattering it tends to be. Black and burgundy are the safe colours.
Does a babydoll flatter every body shape?
Yes, it is the most universal piece of lingerie: the flow from the bust naturally skims over the tummy. In plus sizes, styles with structured cups on top and loose tulle below are the most flattering, and those with a front opening add a daring touch without showing everything.
Can you sleep in a babydoll?
Yes, especially satin or mesh ones without underwires. It is the piece of lingerie most often worn as everyday nightwear, because it combines style and comfort, and many women choose it instead of pyjamas.
Are a picardías and a babydoll the same thing?
Yes. Babydoll is the name most brands use in their product listings; when the style is fitted to the body, it is usually called a chemise.
How do you wash a babydoll?
By hand or on a delicate cycle with cold water, ideally inside a laundry bag and without tumble drying, because lace and tulle snag easily. Always follow what the garment label says.
