What are sex toys for couples?

What the studies say

In a survey of 3,017 women (Hensel et al., 2021, PLoS One), 69.7% reached orgasm more often or enjoyed vaginal penetration more when she or her partner stimulated the clitoris with a finger or a toy during penetration. That is the idea behind a vibrating ring or a U-shaped vibrator.

A study of 11,944 people (Hald et al., 2025, J Sex Res) associated relationship satisfaction with owning a sex toy and with how often it was used as a couple, but not with using it alone. This is an association: it does not show that the toy is the cause.

Among 617 people who used connected toys (Dussault et al., 2026, J Sex Res), using them with a partner, compared with using them only alone, was associated with more sexual desire, with the ability to reach orgasm with a partner and with higher sexual self-esteem. It was also associated with having a partner, more toys and more sexual partners, so here too we cannot speak of cause.

Safety and cleaning

Wash the toy before and after use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, and leave it to air dry; do not boil it, because it has a motor and a battery. If a toy that goes inside passes from one person to another or from the anus to the vagina, wash it before switching or put a new condom on it: in a study of 300 people, using toys during sex appeared among the risk factors for HPV infection (Chen et al., 2020, J Int Med Res). The ring should fit snugly without being tight; take it off if you notice pain, tingling or cold skin.
