What are garters & garter sets?

A garter belt fastens at the waist, and straps hang from it that end in adjustable metal clips. Each clip hooks onto the top edge of a stocking, holds it in place and frames the upper thigh. They come in lace, satin, leather and elastic. A garter is simpler: a band that goes around the thigh, on its own or with a bow, and that you can wear with or without stockings.

Types of garter belts and garters

What changes from one style to another is how much it covers and whether it comes on its own or with other pieces.

  • Classic garter belt: the traditional piece, with 4 to 6 straps. You can pair it with any briefs and stockings you like.
  • Garter belt with built-in briefs: briefs or a thong and garter belt in a single garment, handy if you don't want to think about combinations.
  • Loose garters: a band for the thigh, with a bow, lace or adjustable leather if you want something bolder.
  • Wide corset-style garter belt: covers more and defines the waist. If the waist is what you are after, also look at corsets and bustiers.
  • Garter sets: the garter belt comes with a bra or top, briefs and sometimes stockings or gloves. There are more in lingerie sets.
  • Stockings with built-in garter belt: stockings and garter belt in one piece, in fishnet or lace, with no clips to fasten.

How to choose

  • Straps: the product page says how many it has. If you will be standing or walking for a while, 6 is better than 4.
  • Size: check the size chart on the product page and whether it is one size or adjustable. The garter belt should sit firmly at the waist without digging in; if it is loose, the straps pull it downwards.
  • What is included: check whether it is just the garter belt or a set of two, three or four pieces, and whether the stockings are included.
  • Material: the composition is on the product page. Nylon with elastane moulds to the body; lace and leather change the look and the feel.
  • Fit: check whether the straps can be adjusted in length, so the stockings sit straight whether you are tall or petite.

Does the garter belt go over or under the briefs?

Over. The garter belt goes on top of the briefs so you can take off your underwear without unhooking the garter belt and stockings. It is the most common mistake for beginners.

How do you attach stockings to a garter belt?

Put the garter belt on at the waist first, then the stockings. Fasten the clips one by one: open the clip, slip the edge of the stocking through the opening and close it by pressing the tab onto the button. Do it sitting down and carefully so you don't snag the stockings; 4 clips (2 at the front and 2 at the back) is the minimum, and 6 hold better.

What stockings do you wear with a garter belt?

Stockings that are plain at the top. Stockings for garter belts have no silicone band on the edge, so the clips can grip the fabric.

What is the difference between a garter and a garter belt?

Can you see a garter belt under clothes?
