Magic Wands

A magic wand, or wand massager, is a vibrator with a wide head and intense vibration, made for the clitoris and other sensitive areas, alone or with a partner. To choose one, decide between corded, which gives constant power, or rechargeable, which is quieter and easier to move around, and then look at the size of the head.

What is a magic wand?

It is a vibrator shaped like a wand: a long handle that is easy to grip and a wide, round head that spreads the vibration over a large area. Here, nearly nine in ten are for external use only, with no penetration: you rest them on the clitoris, the nipples or the perineum, and they also work for massaging the neck or back. The rest combine the wand with an insertable part, such as the LELO Switch, which is double-ended with 8.3 cm insertable, the Winona 2 in 1 by Intense Fun, which is a wand and a rabbit in one, or the Pretty Love Verity. The format was popularised by the Hitachi Magic Wand in the 70s, and today it is the most powerful type of vibrator on the market. Many models have a design that goes unnoticed if you leave it in view. If you want something smaller and more targeted, take a look at clitoral vibrators; if you prefer suction to vibration, try clitoral suction toys.

Types of magic wands

Interchangeable heads and attachments greatly expand what a wand can do. Some attachments turn it into a G-spot stimulator, a couples vibrator or a prostate massager, so a single wand with attachments can replace 3-4 different toys.

  • Corded: maximum, constant power that does not lose strength with use. The Doxy and the Magic Wand Plus are the benchmarks of this type.
  • Rechargeable: portable, quieter and slightly less powerful. Le Wand, Lelo Smart Wand 2 and Satisfyer Wand-er lead the way.
  • Mini wands: compact and handheld, for travelling or for more targeted stimulation. If you want something even smaller, take a look at mini vibrators.
  • Dual motor or dual head: they stimulate two points at once. Some double-ended models combine the wand with an insertable part.
  • Flexible head: the neck bends and the head adapts better to the shape of the body.
  • App or remote control: you control them from your phone or from a distance, which is very handy when you use it as a couple.

What the research says

There are no studies focused only on wands, but there are some on vibrators in general, and a wand is one. In a survey of 2,056 women in the United States aged 18 to 60, 52.5% had used a vibrator. Vibrator use was associated with several aspects of sexual function (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, pain and overall function), and those who had used one recently scored higher on most of them (Herbenick et al., 2009, J Sex Med). This is an observed association; it does not show that the vibrator is the cause.

In a small randomised trial of 20 urogynaecology patients with sexual dysfunction and pelvic floor problems, scheduled vibrator use was associated with positive experiences in sexual function, pelvic floor health and mood (Leong et al., 2026, Am J Obstet Gynecol).

Care and cleaning

To clean it, wipe the head with a cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap, or with a toy cleaner, before and after use, and let it air dry. Put it under the tap only if the product details say “fully waterproof (submersible)”, and never boil it: it has a motor. Corded ones must never get wet, so plug them in away from the sink or the bath. Store it clean and dry, preferably in its pouch if it comes with one.

How to choose

  • Power source: corded if you want maximum power without depending on a battery; rechargeable if you want to move freely or take it travelling. For rechargeable ones, check the battery life and charging time in the product details.
  • Size and weight: large wands fill the hand and weigh more; for use with a partner or when travelling, a mini is easier to handle.
  • Head: fixed, flexible or interchangeable, and its diameter if the product details give it. A flexible head adapts better to the body and an interchangeable one takes attachments.
  • Material: ideally the part that touches the skin is silicone; the handle can be ABS, a rigid plastic that is easy to clean.
  • Water: “fully waterproof (submersible)” for the shower or the bath; “splashproof” only withstands a little water.
  • Modes and control: how many speeds and patterns it has, and whether it is operated with buttons, a remote or an app.

Magic Wands: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a wand massager and a vibrator?

A wand massager is a type of vibrator, but almost always for external use: here, nearly nine in ten are not inserted, and those that are, such as the LELO Switch or the Embrace Bunny Wand by CalExotics, which is rabbit-shaped, have a second end for insertion or a G-spot attachment. Its wide head spreads the vibration over a larger area, which is why it works so well on the clitoris, the nipples or the perineum. Conventional vibrators tend to be insertable and narrower.

Are wand massagers very noisy?

It depends on the type. Corded ones tend to be louder (50-60 dB, about the level of a conversation) and modern rechargeable ones are quite a bit quieter (35-45 dB); the Lelo Smart Wand 2 is the quietest on the market. If noise worries you, always choose a rechargeable one.

Can you use a wand massager during sex with a partner?

Yes, and it is one of its best uses. One of you holds the wand against the clitoris during penetration, and the combined stimulation is intense. Mini wands are more practical for this because they take up less space between your bodies.

Is a magic wand too intense for a beginner?

It can be, because it is one of the most powerful vibrators. Start on the lowest speed, with underwear or a thin cloth in between if you prefer, and build up gradually. If it is still too much, try a mini or a clitoral vibrator.

Which lubricant should you use with a clitoral massager?

Use a water-based lubricant, especially if the head is silicone: silicone-based ones can damage its surface. With a wand, a small amount on the area you want to stimulate is enough.

Can it also be used for back massages?

Yes. The wide head works well on the neck, shoulders and back. If you use it for both, wash it between one use and the other.

Can you use the wand anally or on the prostate?

Not internally: the wand is not designed to be inserted into the anus, and neither is the insertable part of double-ended models. Externally you can rest it on the perineum. There are attachments that turn a wand into a prostate massager; otherwise, look among anal toys, which have the right shape.
