What makes an intimate lubricant or oil "organic"?

An intimate product qualifies as organic when its main ingredients come from certified organic cultivation and the formula avoids parabens, synthetic glycerin, artificial fragrances and petroleum-derived preservatives. Synthetic glycerin in particular is the leading cause of irritation and pH disruption in conventional lubricants — organic formulas replace it with natural humectants like hyaluronic acid or aloe vera.

Organic, vegan, natural — three labels that aren't the same

  • Vegan: no animal-derived ingredients (honey, lanolin, milk). Doesn't imply organic.
  • Natural: plant or mineral origin, but not necessarily from certified organic farming.
  • Organic/bio: certified organic cultivation (Ecocert, USDA Organic, COSMOS).

Frequently asked questions

Are they safe with latex condoms?

Water-based organic formulas (Joydivision Bioglide, Shunga Toko, INTT Hydra) are condom-safe. Oils (Orgie Bio Rosemary, Hot Bio) are not — oil degrades latex. Always check the label before combining.

What about silicone sex toys?

Water-based ones, yes. Oils generally aren't recommended — they can affect medical-grade silicone surfaces. For silicone toys, choose Joydivision Bioglide or INTT Hydra.

Does "organic" mean more expensive?

Roughly 15-30% more than the conventional version of the same brand. Worth it if your skin is reactive — one irritation episode costs more than months of price difference.

Do they expire faster than conventional lubricants?

Slightly. Without synthetic preservatives, shelf life is typically 12-24 months after opening (vs 36 months for conventional). Not an issue with regular use. Store cool and dry.
